Creative doesn't go even halfway to explain the imaginative forces behind this hostel on Durban's northern Dolphin Coast in the seaside town of Ballito.

Based around an old house and located on a small hill, accommodation includes a brilliantly designed (and new) treetop house as well as funky dorm rooms in varied locations as you climb upwards. They even offer tent pitches for any happy campers who want to save a few rand. There are plans for further accommodation options so watch this space for more quirky room ideas from the owner.

Monkeybay sleeps 30 people inside and 30 people outside, camping, retainig an intimate feel and it's easy to get to know fellow guests in the many communal indoor and outdoor spaces. It's worth bearing in mind that private rooms are few so do book in advance if you're not after dorm accommodation.

There's a large garden and deck, friendly bar and two braai (barbecue) facilities make it a sociable place but also within easy reach of Ballito's many bars and restaurants. A communal kitchen offers plenty of self-catering facilities including a full herb and seasoning selection. There's free tea and coffee on offer and the staff and owner go out of their way to make guests feel like they are at home here.

Beach life comes easy here with the beach just a minute's walk away and surfboards available for hire from the hostel's 'surf shack'. There are hammocks and outdoor showers too - al fresco is certainly the South African way. Taking it easy is certainly the mantra for this beachside backpackers. It's not for the fusspot, this is easy living, clean but basic and slightly quirky.

Staff can also organise various activities from surfing lessons, day trips to the city, shark diving and even Zulu village visits.

Another huge plus is its proximity to Durban's main King Shaka Airport, which is 18 kilometres and a 15-minute drive away. There is a shortage of budget accommodation this close to the airport so Monkeybay fills a much-needed gap for travellers looking for a reasoanably-priced crash pad near the airport.

Monkey Bay is certainly a sociable backpackers hostel but it's not rowdy. Nights at the bar can go on into the early hours or finish up early, depending on the guests. It doesn't try to pigeon-hole itself in any way but does attract a laidback crowd who enjoy nothing more than beach life and afternoon beers.
